Capstone Academy wins literacy award

Students from the Capstone Academy Milton proudly display a portion of their newly awarded books for winning the county-wide literacy challenge, sponsored by the Early Learning Coalition of Santa Rosa County and the Florida Department of Education, Feb. 19. Throughout the week of Jan. 26 – 30, participating child care centers and Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten classes throughout Santa Rosa County were challenged to take part of in the Florida Department of Education’s Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! by amassing the most reading minutes throughout the week. “I was so surprised to hear the total amounts of minutes we had earned,” said Kathy Mueller, Director of Capstone Academy. “It shows all the hard work and focus that our students and teachers place on reading development.”

The center earned a total of 845 reading minutes and averaging 211 minutes of reading per child. The books and were awarded by the Early Learning Coalition of Santa Rosa County. The Coalition is a non-profit organization responsible for the oversight and funding of early education and child care programs using federal, state and local funding sources.
