Milton resident Victoria Cain was sentenced to six years in a state prison with a three-year minimum mandatory sentence and 15 years of probation for her role in a February 2013 incident in which her three-year-old child consumed sulfuric acid. The acid, which was placed in a small plastic cup with a straw, was used for the purpose of manufacturing methamphetamine, according to the State Attorney Bill Eddins office.
Cain was charged with child neglect causing great bodily harm, trafficking in methamphetamine, possession of controlled substance, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia.
On February 20 of 2013, Cain’s boyfriend, Jonathan Wayne Glass, brought the acid to a residence he shared with Cain at Piney Woods Place Apartments in Milton. Glass lived with Cain and her three children. The press release states that Glass brought the acid to the apartment for the purpose of manufacturing methamphetamine.
With the acid was placed inside the cup, the child drank the contents while brushing his teeth. The statement claims both Glass and Cain failed to seek medical attention for the child. Glass even instructed another child to not call for 911 assistance, the release said.
A nearby neighbor, who heard screaming and the sound of a child moaning coming from Cain’s apartment, called 911. As result, the child was then taken to Sacred Heart Hospital for immediate treatment. Consuming the sulfuric acid caused severe chemical burns to the child’s chin, lips, mouth, tongue esophagus and hands, the release said. After being initially treated in the emergency room, the child was transferred to a pediatric intensive unit due to the severity of his injuries.
The release said the child has now recovered from his injuries “but has some scarring and must undergo further medical procedures every six months.”
Cain testified during the trials of Glass, which led to his conviction on Dec. 19, 2014 on charges of child neglect causing great bodily harm, trafficking in methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. According to the press release, Glass was initially sentenced to 25 years in prison. Glass subsequently entered a plea to the charges of unlawful possession of listed chemical and conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine and was sentenced to five years.
Billy Wheeler and Blake Weekley of the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office conducted the investigation. Attorneys Stephanie G. Pace and Amber Rowland prosecuted the case on behalf of the state.
Cain’s sentence was delivered by Circuit Judge Marci Goodman on Wednesday.
