The Santa Rosa Art Association, Inc. announces its 2015 Teacher Grants to Santa Rosa County teachers. Each year the SRAA awards grants to teachers of any discipline who will use art in their curriculum.
This year the awards have been granted to teachers in five schools. The theme teachers were given when they applied was "Imagine" to be used as a basis for their proposed projects and use of funds.
The proposed by the 8th grade American History teacher at Holley Navarre Middle School was entitled "Across the Decades in American History." Students in groups will be assigned one of eleven decades between 1900 and 2010 to research and create collages to illustrate each of those decades.
Two art teachers and three Spanish teachers at Gulf Breeze High School have received a grant to create Alebriges, whimsical animals originally from Oxaca, Mexico. This project will impact 600 art and Spanish students ranging in age from 14 to 18 and at Sims Middle School, 250 students will create "Imagine Florida without our animal friends” after doing research on the diversity of Florida's animals and their importance to the ecosystem. They will create mono-prints to illustrate animals native to Florida.
The art teacher at Central High School applied for and received a grant for students to create and work together in teams to illustrate a story they have written after reading Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are."
The last project proposed by the art teacher at Pace High School is taking the art students to the First City Art Center in Pensacola where they can experience glass blowing first hand.
Teachers from north and south Santa Rosa County sent their proposals to the SRAA in October and were notified in December. The projects must be completed in time to present the results to the SRAA membership at their April 25th meeting. The committee that reviewed the applications and selected the winners comprised of SRAA members Phyllis Ryan, Dulce Snowman and Mary Richardson.
The Santa Rosa Art Association, Inc. was founded in the 1960's as an art study club and today has members with interest and expertise in many mediums and serves and supports artists in the Gulf Coast area. More information can be found at www.santarosaartassociation.com.
