Nine PSC students recognized at Walter F. Spara writing competition

Nine Pensacola State College students recently received awards at the annual Walter F. Spara Writing Competition. First place winners received $100, second place received $50, and third place received $25. 

Essay winners were Roxana Resendiz-Garcia, first place for “Trophy Nation;” Jenni Carpenter, second place for “Going through the Motions;” and Brooke Tanswell, third place for “The American Dream Trap."

Short fiction winners were Matthew Daniel, first place for “Fiddler’s Green;” Nikol Garner, second place for “The Last Time;” and Laura McBay, third place for “Answered Questions.”

Poetry winners were Mary Whitham, first place for “Turn of events in 14;” Benjamin Lowrimore, second place for “Untitled;” and Taylor Young, third place for “In My Hands."

The competition is named for Walter Spara, a PSC English professor from 1966 to 2000, who initiated the college’s creative writing program and its nationally recognized literary journal, “Hurricane Review.”
