Pace woman facing DUI, child neglect charges in Monday night incident

Debbie Sue Jones, Pace is facing multiple charges from the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) and the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office (SRSO), including driving under the influence, child endangerment, and eluding police in an incident on Monday night, reports said.

Around 8 p.m., Jones, 54, was driving a two-door vehicle with a 10-year-old child as a passenger, according to a FHP media release.

Jones’s vehicle reportedly rear ended another vehicle near the intersection of westbound U.S. Highway 90 and Wakins Street.

Jones reported briefly exited her vehicle to speak with the other driver in the incident −Brandon Decardenas, Milton −only to get back into her vehicle and “fled the scene of the collision,” the FHP report said.

According to SRSO, Decardenas followed Jones to the area of Frasier Lane in the Spencer Oaks subdivision and alerted authorities, who located Jones’s vehicle in the area.

The report states Jones vehicle was “swerving from one side of the road to the other, nearly hitting parked cars.”

After Jones initially failed to pull her vehicle over when a sheriff’s deputy initiated emergency lights and sirens. The vehicle then came to a stop on Frasier Lane.

Deputies report after Jones stopped her vehicle and shut off the engine, she exited the vehicle while “stumbling and screaming.”

In addition to the slurred speech, the officer also reported smelling an alcoholic odor emitting from Jones.

Reports said when handcuffed and placed inside a patrol vehicle, Jones reportedly began slamming her head on the window and kicking the car door, officers had to further restrain Jones from injuring herself, the report stated.

Jones also refused to attempt a field sobriety test.

Reports said dispatch later confirmed Jones’s driver’s license was revoked on several occasions in addition to facing four other DUI incidents.

While in route to the Santa Rosa County Jail, deputies report Jones became unconscious from her intoxication. She was then taken to the emergency room for medical evaluation. Medical staff reported Jones had a blood alcohol content of 0.231.  Upon her arrival at the jail, Jones refused to submit to a breath sample.

Jones remains incarcerated at the county Jail and with a $37,000 bond.
