Ride for Rescues’ poker run to benefit local dog rescue

The Panhandle Box and Rotts Rescue in Milton welcomes any motorcycle enthusiasts and supporters to participate in their first ‘Ride for Rescues’ poker run on November 29.

“One hundred percent of the funds go towards the dogs,” said rescue director Jonathan Lawson. “This is the largest fundraiser we have ever had.”

In addition to providing care for sick or injured dogs, the rescue also trains service dogs for soldiers with post-traumatic stress disorder.

So far, the Milton-based rescue has donated two trained service dogs to the Warrior Won organization.

Lawson said the idea from the poker run came from volunteers Orkie Chavis and Nichole Causey of Orkie and Company Hair and Nails.

“This is our first time organizing anything like this,” Chavis said. “Everyone has been so helpful.”

Several area businesses have contributed raffle items for the event, which will be given away at the end of the event.

Both Chavis and Lawson plan to make the poker run an annual event.

Registration begins at 10 a.m. at the Night Train Tavern, located at 8121 Hwy. 90 in East Milton, stands up at 11: 30 a.m.

Participants are able to select a card for their poker hand at several locations along the poker run route, including Shaggy G’s, The Office Lounge, Ollies Neighborhood Grille and The Cove Pub.

The participant with the best poker hand wins 50 percent of the profits from the event.  Lunch will also be available with a donation.

A registration fee of $10 per motorcycle is required, including a $5 per additional rider.
