Dear Editor,
I believe the public’s interest in voter turnout could be improved if more information was easily accessible regarding the candidates. Presently, all we see are the campaign ‘litter’ that’s posted along the roadways and constant slander and propaganda ads on TV, newspapers and radio. All too many times the winner is based on who had the most money to spend or whose face looks better.
I think it would be a great community service if the Press Gazette would list information of all the candidates. The list should include all candidates from each local district through the state level. All parties and independents should be included. The information should provide a brief description of the job title, specific questions with word limitations from each candidate that covers their background, political views, and goals. The present incumbents should include what they’ve accomplished during their past term. New opposing candidates could list what their plans and goals are if elected. The list can be filled out by the candidates. If anyone refuses, just state that as their response. It’s just not possible for many of the voters to search out this information for every candidate on their own. The Milton Chamber of Commerce was giving out similar information before the recent primary elections. It was appreciated but did not include many of the candidates and had minimal information. This comprehensive list could be used four years later as a reference to decide if the elected people have accomplished their goals or failed. Give us some tools to hold our elected officials accountable. “One person, one vote” can get us out of this mess if we are informed instead of manipulated.
