57 mile deputy pursuit ends in Alabama cotton field

A high speed chase occurred Friday evening beginning at the corner of Hamilton Bridge Road and Windham Road in Milton and ended at Carver Road in Atmore, Alabama in a cotton field. The pursuit lasted 56.9 miles, according to reports. Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Rich Aloy said it began with a traffic stop for a seatbelt violation. Aloy said the driver fled the traffic stop, causing the deputy to take evasive measures to keep his person from being struck by the vehicle, a felony offense. Reports said during the chase, the male driver and the female passenger switched positions and deputies could tell, due to erratic driving, she was under the influence.

Antoine Lamar Goldsmith, 37, Milton, was arrested for flee/elude, driving while suspended habitual offender, assault on officer. Delana Roberts Phillips, 51, Milton, was charged with DUI, flee/elude, and 4 counts of assault on officer. Phillips was charged with four counts of assault on an officer because of swerving in attempt to hit police vehicles while in pursuit. Currently, Escambia County, Alabama has the two suspects in their custody. Goldsmith is charged with aggravated assault on police officer, elude/flee police and driving while license suspended. Phillips is charged with DUI, flee/elude and aggravated assault on a police officer. Escambia County Sheriff’s Office officials said both Goldsmith and Phillips are being held on $15,000 bond. Aloy said warrants were applied for and the suspects will eventually be returned to Santa Rosa County. Both suspects were arrested Thursday for narcotics violations from a simple tail light violation and were out on bail.
