PSC career fair well attended

Wednesday, Pensacola State College held its summer career fair. Representing a variety of career fields, 33 companies attended including IHOP, Cumulus Media, Lakeview Center, and Florida Fish & Wildlife. Jantzen Whitehead, coordinator of career and technical education student resources said, “There are lots of food service and public service employers here. A lot are looking for student employees, being here. Some are also looking for part-time work. PSC is also hiring.” Tommy Heaton with ST Aerospace Mobile said his company has about 6 to 8 positions posted. “I’ve gotten a good response,” Heaton said. “There are lots of military technicians in the area.” Larry Truhlicka, VP of operations for IHOP, said he’s looking for ground level employees, like servers and cooks, but also managers. “There is room to grow here,” he said. Truhlikca said interested people need to fill out an application online and take a test assessing attitude and teamwork skills. “There is work out there; you’ve got to connect.” Sherry Duffey, coordinator of student job services at the Pensacola campus, said, “Come prepared, with an up to date resume, dressed well. You may only have five minutes. You have to market yourself in that five minutes.” Marian Brusco came to the event saying she’s a pharmacist looking for something related to her field. Duffey said, “Use your transfer skills if you’re finding nothing in your field. You may find a business looking for your exact skills.” Duffey also encouraged students who have yet to graduate. “Start networking now. Come to job fairs. The interview process could take a month. Get to know employer representatives and job fair workers by name.” Vickie Peritt said she’s changing careers from a self employed wedding coordinator to something in the medical field. “I did find some good leads. It was a small group but informative and personal,” she said. Chris Hollis, a returning E4 Army veteran said he also found good leads. “I’m going to go home and apply online. Everything is online,” he said. PSC’s next career fair will be October 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Pensacola main campus.
