Sheriff’s Office reports telephone scam

The Santa Rosa Sheriff’s Office (SRSO) said a telephone scam was reported recently.

The scam artist used the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office to target individuals in the scam to commit fraud. SRSO Deputy Rich Aloy, public information officer said a victim was contacted by an individual posing as a Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s deputy. Aloy said the caller stated the individual had an active warrant and payment for the violation could be taken over the phone to avoid additional fines and or arrest. Aloy said the individual was aggressive in nature and stated the victim was going to be arrested if the fine was not taken care of right away. The victim was given a phone number not belonging to the Sheriff’s Office.

The SRSO made a statement saying the sheriff’s office does not solicit individuals for fines or fees over the telephone. The Warrants Division will occasionally send out postcard notices on a case by case basis. The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office does not collect any fees involving warrants.
