Backyard chickens raised on the farm will typically need very little persuasion to be put up for the night as chickens have an internal clock telling them when it’s time to go to roost. Roost time can also be announced by the alpha male rooster who will call free ranged birds to the coop. Once they’re all in for the evening the bickering begins over who will roost where.
