Officials are investigating a Saturday hunting accident that resulted in the death of a 30-year-old man, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Christopher Garrett was deer hunting around 5 p.m. on property owned by his family in a field behind Munson Highway when he was shot, according to Stan Kirkland spokesman for FWC.
Garrett and 30-year-old Milton resident Johnny Farmer left their tree stands around dusk when Farmer saw motion in the woods and shot a .12-guage shot gun, hitting Garrett with buckshot from his ribs to his legs, according to the FWC hunting accident report.
Farmer was less than 100 yards from Garrett at the time, Kirkland said.
Garrett was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola in critical condition and underwent surgery. He was pronounced dead around 11 a.m. Sunday.
The shooting is being investigated as a hunting accident. Neither man was wearing hunter orange, which is legal on private property.
Kirklandsaid when the investigation is complete the State Attorney’s Office will review the case.
