WEST FLORIDA PUBLIC LIBRARY DIGS INTO ESCAMBIA’S PAST

PENSACOLA– The West Florida Public Library is pleased to announce the kickoff of Explore Pensacola History, a year-long series exploring the people, places, and events that make up Escambia County’s unique historical heritage. On Thursday, October 3, Dr. Judith Bense will kick off the series with “Unearthing Pensacola” from 6 – 7 p.m. at the Main Library. Before becoming President of the University of West Florida, Dr. Bense put Pensacola archaeology on the map with her numerous excavations and tireless preservation efforts. She will talk about her experiences and adventures in bringing to light the treasures buried just beneath our feet.

Explore Pensacola History will consist of numerous programs throughout the year focusing on many facets of the area’s 450-year history. Speakers include local experts in archaeology and history, as well as presenters and performers from outside the area who will discuss Pensacola’s place in state and national history. The series also highlights culture as representatives from the area’s diverse communities are invited to share their historical perspectives and ways of life.

As part of its new five-year strategic plan, the West Florida Public Library is working to promote the community’s knowledge of local history and genealogy. “Many residents are not aware of Escambia County’s rich history,” said Library Administrator Darlene Howell. “It is our goal to help the community draw connections between the past and present to appreciate what is unique about Florida’s First Place City.”

Funding for Explore Pensacola History is provided in part by a grant from the Florida Humanities Council with funds provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Additional support is provided by the ongoing generosity of the Friends of West Florida Public Library.
