Pottery on the Wheel, Clay Hand-Building, Make Your Own Glass, Glassblowing, Kids’ Pottery and Clay Sculpting workshops will be held at First City Art Center at 1060 N. The Hot Glass Studio at the First City Art Center is open Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. for “Make Your Own Glass” workshops by appointment (walk-ins are welcome, too). The workshops offer a short but comprehensive introduction for people to become familiar with the process of working molten hot glass. Students will be able to pick out their color then design and create a piece of glass with the assistance of our professional glass artists. This is also a great way to make special gifts for any occasion from a birthday to a wedding to Christmas. Bring a friend or come with a group to enjoy the experience together. Please note that your glass must slowly cool in the annealer for 24 hours or longer, depending on what else is in the annealer, before you can take it home.
Make Your Own Glass Ornament – $25
Create your own Glass Ornament for yourself or someone special. Each student will get to pick out glass colors for their design and get to participate in the process of blowing a piece of molten glass into a lovely ornament. These ornaments are great for the holidays or all year round as a sun catcher. Note: Students will be blowing their ornament. This class takes 10 minutes.
Make Your Glass Flower – $35
Create a beautiful flower with our in-house professional glass artists. This is a great way to be introduced to the process of working and sculpting molten hot glass. Each student will pick out glass colors for their design and then work with a professional glass artist to sculpt a unique glass flower. Note: No blowing involved. This is a sculpting class.
Make Your Own Glass Pendant – $45 (NEW!)
What a fun way to become introduced to the art of glass flame-working. Each student will get to pick out glass colors for their design and get to make their own pendant. Makes a great gift!
Make Your Own Glass Paperweight – $45
The collector’s favorite! Become introduced to molten hot glass through the process of creating your very own glass paperweight. Each student will pick out glass colors, design, and then create a glass paperweight with their own hands and the assistance of our professional glass artists. Note: No blowing involved. This is a sculpting class.
Make Your Own Glass Jellyfish Paperweight – $95 (NEW!)

Make Your Own Glass Swedish Bowl – $95
Create this beautiful and unique ‘Swedish Bowl’ with your very own hands. Design your color scheme with the glass colors and then create this beautiful bowl with the assistance of professional glass blower, Sam Cornman. This is a solid sculpted piece of glass and no blowing is involved. Why is it called a ‘Swedish Bowl’? Well, you’ll have to take the class to find out this secret from Sam.
Make Your Own Vase – $100
This a fun way for a person to become introduced to the art of glass blowing. Each student will get to pick out glass
colors for their design and get to participate in the process of making a beautiful glass vase.
Beginning glassblowing – Intro

This three hour class is designed to give beginners an introduction to basic glassblowing. The class will give students ample hands-on experience as they learn classic techniques such as gathering molten hot glass, blowing bubbles, shaping the glass and making basic forms. By the end of the workshop students will have made 2-3 original pieces of glass art including a paperweight and a drinking glass. Shipping is available for visiting students.

Beginning glassblowing – 3-Week Workshop

What: A 3-week, 12-hour workshop on glassblowing
When: Saturdays: Sept. 14, 21 and 28
Time: Saturday 3:30 p.m.- 7:30 p.m.
Cost: $550
Min. Age – 14
Price includes instruction and all materials and tools.
This 12-hour class is designed to give the first time glass blower the foundations of beginning glassblowing and basic glassblowing skills. The class will give students hands on experience as they learn classic techniques such as gathering molten hot glass, blowing bubbles, shaping the glass, making basic forms, making punties, how to use the glass blowing tools and proper shop safety procedures. By the end of the workshop students will have made various glass items in clear glass and color. Students will also now be able to start working with a partner independently from the instructor through studio rentals and open studio. Shipping is available for visiting students.

Have you ever wanted to get your hands in clay, meet interesting people and turn mud into something beautiful to look at or use? We will give you a workshop on wheel throwing, hand-building and some history of pottery. It's a great date night, friends’ night out, or family night out to make some pottery together. Each person will be able to complete at least one piece of pottery. This workshop could be a great introduction to clay before taking one of our six-week pottery courses.
