Green-Up Opens for Spring March 1

Bagdad – Green-Up Santa Rosa, the non-profit nursery that helps to beautify the community, will open for the spring on Friday, March 1. Hours of operation will be Tuesday through Saturday from 9 am until 4 pm, and will open until 5 pm on those days when the time changes. The nursery has all types of plants: trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals and more. The plants are all well suited to this area and are reasonably priced. Knowledgeable staff, all with over 15 years experience, will be on hand to answer questions and make recommendations. The nursery is located at 6758 Park Avenue in Milton, just down the street from Milton High.

The emphasis this year at the nursery is landscaping on a budget. Most plant material is in one and three gallon containers, making the choice an affordable one. Tours of the nursery will be given every Saturday at 10 am and again at 2 pm by Director John Tonkin, who is also a Florida Master Gardener. Green-Up is open to all members of the public, and people can feel good about getting good quality plants and contributing to the beautification of our area.

Benny Russell Park Closes for Renovations

Benny Russell Park, located at 5417 West Spencer Field Road, will close for renovations Monday, March 4 for approximately two weeks. The renovation project will improve safety, increase the life of the structure, and help reduce overall maintenance in the future. The extremely popular, community-built playground opened in 2001 and was named after Benny Russell, Santa Rosa School Superintendent from 1980-1999.

Renovations will include the repair and replacement of broken equipment and design changes to improve visibility, better facilitate age separation within the playground areas, increase accessibility, and reduce exposure to treated wood by replacing handrails and other “high touch” areas with composite materials.

The Santa Rosa County Board of Commissioners approved a contract with Leather and Associates for design, oversight and inspections services with public works crews completing the labor, at the Feb. 14 meeting.  Total renovations costs are estimated at $110,500.
