Two men who were hospitalized in separate vehicle accidents in late January have succumbed to their injuries.
The Florida Highway Patrol reports Thomas Alton Sanders, 57, died Wednesday, Jan. 30 following a one-vehicle motorcycle accident that occurred on Jan. 27. The second man, David M. Kicker, 63, died Jan. 31 — one week after a three-car accident put him in the hospital in critical condition.
Kicker was the fourth vehicle traveling north on Highway 87 when two cars ahead of him stopped for a turning vehicle, according to FHP. Reports note Kicker did not stop, but swerved his 2010 Ford Explorer to the shoulder of the roadway in an attempt to avoid a collision. The front of his vehicle hit the back right of a 2006 Honda Accord driven by Orion Wayne Motsco, 20, of Jay. The impact threw Motsco's vehicle into a 1998 Chevy 1500 truck drive by John P Miller, Robertsdale, Ala.
Reports say Kicker's vehicle only had one tire on the pavement, resulting in a counter-clockwise rotation and a full barrel roll, landing on all four tires. He was not wearing a seatbelt.
Sander's is now the third person to die from a motorcycle accident — all occurring the same weekend of Jan. 25.
Shaaron Jackson Lively, 59, Navarre, was killed while driving her motorcycle in Ft. Walton Beach. Another driver crossed into the path of Lively at an intersection. Lively, who was wearing a helmet, died at the scene of the accident. The other driver, William E. Smith, 42, Ft. Walton Beach, was operating a 2010 GMC pickup truck. He was reportedly not injured. Reports say Smith was not under the influence of alcohol.
Taylor Austin Weir, 19, died in Pensacola after a crash on Highway 29 when another driver hit the side of the motorcycle, a 2003 Honda. He was transported to Sacred Heart Hospital, where he expired several hours after the accident. FHP reports say Weir was going northbound on the center lane of Highway 29 when a 2005 Kia UT driven by Kathleen Eccles, 31, traveling south at the left turn lane attempted a left hand turn onto Van Pelt Lane. As Eccles turned, the right side front bumper hit the left side of the motorcycle. The Kia traveled east after the collision and came to rest after hitting a utility pole. The motorcycle stopped about 20 feet east of the northbound lane where it was traveling, blocking two lanes on Van Pelt Lane.
Weir's, Sanders', and Kicker's accidents were not alcohol-related, according to the FHP. Blood alcohol reports on Lively have not come back to authorities, according to Lt. Steve Preston, FHP.
