General Federation of Women’s Clubs’ Milton Woman’s received a $1,750 grant from the Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival to support a one-week Summer Drama Day Camp for fifth-grade students from Rhodes, Berryhill and East Milton elementary schools. GFWC Milton Woman’s Club is celebrating 100 years of service to the Milton community, and the Camp will pay tribute to their anniversary by re-creating A Tom Thumb Wedding, a one-act play used for fundraising in the early years of their history. The Summer Drama Day Camp will introduce students to the intricacies of planning and producing a dramatic production. Students will be given one week to audition and memorize the one-act play, and they will create sets and costumes. They will then perform the play for family and friends at the end of the week. Milton Woman’s Club was founded in 1913 in response to needs perceived in the community that were not being addressed. For the last 100 years, members of the Woman’s Club have committed themselves to service to the community in conservation, home life, education, international affairs, public issues and the arts. The club was chosen as the Outstanding Club Florida (25 or less members) for 12 years, and in 1998 received the Lois B. Perkins Leadership Award for most outstanding club in the GFWC Florida Federation of Women’s Clubs. This small but dedicated group of women continues to make an impact on their community through their volunteer efforts and by partnering with other community organizations and non-profits. The Summer Drama Day Camp will be June 24-28 at the GFWC Milton Woman’s Club on Oak Street in downtown Milton. The club regards the opportunity to conduct the camp as a fitting expression of their 100th Anniversary.
