Motorists using U.S. 90 East can breath a sigh of relief. There will be no more lane closures and one-way traffic funneling resulting in long waits. Resurfacing the highway from a few yards east of the Local Yokel to the east end of the old brick road has ended, according to the Florida Department of Transportation. Some areas of the highway were widened, and new turn lanes were added for safety. The five-mile stretch of road construction added a westbound left and an eastbound turn lane off Persimmon Hollow Road. An extended right turn lane at Industrial Boulevard also was extended. The 11-month, $1.8 million project also included some sidewalk construction and American with Disabilities Act improvements. The usual drainage and safety features were part of the overall project, as were new, visible pavement markings, U.S. 90 East serves a heavily populated area including the Santa Rosa County Industrial Park, the alternate travel route to the south end of the county on Highway 87, and residents east to the Okaloosa County boundary. A midweek update from FDOT indicates the following: • U.S. 90 to Commerce Road: Crews from Panhandle Grading & Paving Company have begun laying the final layer of asphalt. Drivers can expect intermittent lane restrictions from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Estimated completion: winter 2013. • North of CSX Railroad Bridge to south of Commerce Road: No work took place this week on this section of Avalon Boulevard. Estimated completion: winter 2013. • South of Moors Lodge to CSX Railroad: Crews continue to work on roadway construction including milling of the existing roadway, drainage, embankment and placement of sod. No planned lane closures at this time. Estimated completion: fall 2013. • Interstate 10 to south of the Moors Lodge: Crews continue construction activities for the future southbound roadway between Del Monte and San Juan streets. Bridge construction continues for the future two lane northbound roadway. Sidewalk, curb and gutter construction between San Juan Street and San Pablo Streets will continue. Erosion control devices continue to be maintained throughout the project. Estimated completion: fall 2013. Construction activities are weather-dependent and may be delayed or rescheduled in the event of inclement weather.
