UWF adds five early signees for 2013-14

Jacob Benefield

West Florida baseball head coach Mike Jeffcoat is proud to announce five early signees for the Argonauts for the 2013-14 academic year. Jacob Benefield (Pace/Pace HS), Dawson Brown (McDonough, Ga./Georgia Perimeter College), Jon Hagan (Orlando/Orangewood Christian Academy), Trumon Jefferson (Dekalb, Ga./Georgia Perimeter College) and David Moorhead (Pensacola/Tate HS) all signed national letters of intent with UWF during the NCAA’s early signing period. "Our fall class is one that fills our needs for the future and will have an immediate impact with the program,” said Jeffcoat. “Assistant coach Shane Gierke has done an excellent job in balancing this class with three high school position players that have a tremendous upside and two junior college players that should step right in and fill our needs in the outfield and on the mound." Benefield is one of two local products to sign with UWF and is a 6-foot-1-inch, 180-pound shortstop and pitcher from Pace High School. “Jacob is a versatile player that will help us on the mound and as a position player," Gierke said. "I think Jacob's arm strength is his biggest tool, and we are looking for big things in the future. We are excited to see Jacob develop through our program the next four years.” Dawson Brown is one of two signees from Georgia Perimeter College, and he is a 6-foot-5-inch, 185-pound right-handed pitcher from McDonough, Ga. Jon Hagan is a signee from Orangewood Christian Academy in Orlando, and he is a 6-foot-3-inch 210-pound first baseman and outfielder. Trumon Jefferson is another signee from Georgia Perimeter College, and he is a 6-foot-3-inch 185-pound outfielder. David Moorhead is another local product, hailing from Tate High School, and he is a 6-foot 185-pound catcher and outfielder. “David is very athletic kid that was a quarterback at Tate High School," Gierke said. "We see him being an everyday catcher for the future, but he also is athletic enough to play an outfield spot. We are very excited to have David be a part of the UWF family.” The Argonauts will start their 2013 campaign at home on Feb. 2-3 against Florida Southern.
